We bought a potty for Bee about 3 months ago. We’ve encouraged her to use it but get greeted with “I’ll use it later” or “I’ll do it tomorrow” every time we push the issue. At my parents’ house a few weeks ago she asked to use the toilet so I rushed her off to the bathroom and use it she did. Any attempts to repeat the process were met with the “later” response however so we dropped the issue reasoning that when she’s ready she’ll tell us.
Cut to today, I cycle home from work (not as impressive as yesterday as I took the longer way home) and find the Pickles out in the garden. Bee is running round in her nappy and hat and Miri has her pretty stripy dress and a baseball cap on and is playing with the water table. At some point Miri, in her chubby little enthusiasm, splashes Bee and her nappy so off it comes. She commences running around all “nudey rudey” as she puts it. Chloe decides to try the potty again and, surprisingly, Bee is amenable to the idea, sitting on it for about 5 minutes before running off. We ask her if she needs a wee but just get told “No”. Chloe heads in to cook dinner and I start tidying the garden up. Bee comes rushing in to the house telling us “I want spaghetti bolognese and pasta please” before heading back out to the garden declaring “I need a wee-wee”. Much to our shock and surprise she does indeed use the potty and is pleased as punch at this exciting new development (as are we). As a special treat we let her wear her “big girl pants” during dinner while asking her every few minutes if she needs a wee again (she doesn’t).
Dinner over Chloe gets ready to get in the bath, and Bee suddenly runs into the Dining room to get her potty and take it into the bathroom. And, again to our surprise, she uses it again! Could this be the breakthrough to no more nappies? We’ll have to see what happens tomorrow….

Gardening is for old people and people that have nothing better to do. Yet somehow I found myself weeding, pruning, cutting, re-potting and pulling apart an old dead tree stump this evening. How very odd. I think in part it’s because we’re spending more time in the garden with Bee and Miri (speaking of which, important potty news to share later!) and I want it to look good while we’re out there, but partly because last Summer my Grandad spent an insane amount of effort tidying up our garden and shed and I feel that I need to keep it neat as that’s what he would have wanted.
“You’ve not let that ivy grow all over the shed again have you?” I can hear in my head. And now I can say, “No, it’s all been cut back and looks as good as when you first painted it”
I miss him.
