There’s no kind of atmosphere. I’m all alone, more or less.
It’s March 1992, I’m a mere 12 years of age and have just finished watching a fantastic series finale of Red Dwarf. I’ve been watching it since series 2 (yes, I started young) and have read the two novels and greatly enjoyed them despite being told they were too adult for me by a teacher at Middle School. The second novel I thought was very, very good. All sounds good eh? Bring on series 6!
Jump to October 1993, series 6 of Red Dwarf is about to start and I’m pretty excited. I’ve already read the script for the first episode in the “Primordial Soup” book thanks to certain “connections” in the book printing trade and am looking forward to the new series and Starbug based setting. The first 3 episodes are all good but 4 and 5 just recycle previously used plot elements. Episode 6 is just rubbish. I’m disappointed. Maybe the next series and a return to Red Dwarf itself will improve? I’m sure I’ll find out next year….
And so we leap to January 1997. It’s been a long time since I watched Red Dwarf and times and tastes have changed. I watch the new series eagerly but am very, very disappointed. The new “filmic” look doesn’t gel with the production values and the general feeling I get from the series is that it hasn’t really progressed. Interestingly, on reading the Wikipedia episode summaries, I can only recall about 3 episodes but know I watched them all. That’s probably quite telling.
February 1999: I watch the first of series 8 but don’t continue. It hasn’t improved from the last although the return of “normal” video and studio audiences is certainly better. I accidentally catch the ending of the final episode but feel no remorse over having missed the rest.
Some point in 2002 or 2003: Some of my housemates and I are up late channel hopping and see that “Polymorph” is on UKTV Gold or whatever it was called back then. All of us were big Red Dwarf fans and remember that episode as being a very good one so happily put it on. Over the next half an hour I think we laughed out loud about twice. One comment made: “It just seems to revolve around people insulting each other in bizarre future-themed and obscure ways.” We all feel disappointed and a tad confused over how funny we all used to find it.
Red Dwarf then. The three specials have just finished airing on Dave but I’ve not watched them. I’ve read the synposes of the first two but I don’t think I’ll try and catch them. Sorry.

# - Keep forgetting it’s Friday. Easter is brilliant. #
- Would be excited about Red Dwarf were it 1992 and I was still a teenager. #

- Eggs! #
