N97 Mini iSync Plugin

Nokia now have an official plugin available.

The N97 Mini has been available for about a month now and Nokia still haven’t released an iSync plugin. I had a look into how to make a plugin and found that it looked relatively easily. So I made one. This took me an hour, someone at Nokia could do it in 10 minutes.

And so here’s my unofficial N97 Mini plugin version 0.5 0.9.

Current issues:

  • The icon is the N97, not the Mini. Fixed in v0.9 below
  • Syncing is Bluetooth only, no USB (yet). Fixed in v0.9 below
  • This is the first time I’ve ever made an iSync plugin and I’ve no idea if it’ll work for anyone other than me! As such this is considered development software provided as-is. I take no responsibility for any of loss of data.

Back up your data first!

OK? Then download Stop! New version available below! the plugin, put it in /Library/PhonePlugins and let me know if it works.

The next version will hopefully add USB syncing and have an N97 Mini icon.

I’ve now updated the plugin with an N97 Mini icon and hopefully USB sync. I don’t have my USB cable to hand so will have to rely on someone else to test this for me.

v0.9 is available here and the original download link has also been updated to point to the new version.

    good thanks
    it’s work. I install already.

Thanks for the effort! I followed your instructions but can’t get it working. I dragged the folder in /Library/PhonePlugins. But iSync requires I add a Device. It sees my phone, but says “iSync can not connect to this device”.. Any help?

Are you using Bluetooth or USB? Also, is your phone already paired with your Mac in the Bluetooth Preference Pane?

  4. Emvee’s avatar

I’m using Bluetooth and my phone is paired. Maybe it’s because I am on Tiger 10.4.11?

  5. Emvee’s avatar

In the meanwhile I also tried with USB.. No success.. Did you add a device? Or is it already added when you drag the folder into /Library/PhonePlugins? As you can see.. I’m not a wizzkid…

    thanx !!!

    – OS X 10.6.2 – bluetooth — ok.

  7. Andrew Green’s avatar

Worked for me. Many thanks. Make sure you duplicate it to Macintosh HD\Library and not applications\library

  8. jim’s avatar

@Emvee It should be Ok with any version of iSync higher than 2.3 which came with 10.4.9. Just to clarify this is how I did it:

    • Pair phone with the Mac
    • Activate Bluetooth on Mac and phone (also made my phone discoverable)
    • Put plugin into [Macintosh HD]/Library/PhonePlugins
    • Open iSync
    • Add Device
    • Selected it from the list
    • Synced.

It sounds like you’re doing most/all of the above but can you confirm at what point it’s falling over please?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Can’t figure out why it’s not working. Everything is up to date and works fine with pairing. “Browse device” also works fine.

When I click “add device” it does find my phone. It says:
    - 1 Device found
    - Name of my phone and the standard phone icon (looks like an ancient Nokia)
    - iSync can not connect to this device
I see my phone in the list, but can not select my phone from there.

Worked fine with my N95 8GB…

    Hi Jim,

it works fine for me. No USB sync but I think it’s more an Isync spec than an bug in your plug.

once again thanks for your time,

    Christophe

    Hi Jim,

It now has the same error with my N95 8GB (with official Nokia plugin), so the problem is definitely my iSync. I started a discussion on the Mac forum. Hope that helps.

Thanks again for the effort, i’ll let you know when I’m up and running.

I draged and dropped the file but could not get it to work then I renamed the file .plugin and all is well thanks!

  13. Dick’s avatar

Has anyone got it to work on USB?

    What about WLAN?

  14. jim’s avatar

@Dick WLAn isn’t an option with iSync. I’ve not yet had a successful report of USB sync and haven’t been able to get it to work myself either. I don’t know if this is an iSync issue or a plugin issue though.

  15. Dick’s avatar

Thanks… I downloaded the file and looked for the PhonePlugins folder in Macintosh[HD]/library… but there is no PhonePlugins folder anywhere on my (Snow Leopard) Mac that I can find – do I just create the folder, or is it somewhere else?

  16. jim’s avatar

You should just be able to create the folder if it isn’t there already. You could also install the official Nokia N97 iSync plugin which should create the folder for you.

Well done Erik. Worked like a charm with my MBP running 10.5.8 via Bluetooth.

I had to re-pair my MBP running OSX 10.6.2 and the N97 mini but then it worked like a charm.
    Very well done.
    Thanx!

OK ! N97 mini is Connected and sync is on progress. seems to be ok for me with bluetooth Mac 10.5.8 ISync Version 3.0.2 (574.0)

result ok with some options modified for my usage in ISync. (Synch of contact without tel number)

    Thanks a lot to everybody.

  20. Dick’s avatar

Thanks… works on Bluetooth… could not get it to work on USB
    Snow leopard (synced to Entourage)

  21. Dick’s avatar

Please talk me through getting USB sync set up.

How do you get the mac to find the phone on USB

  22. jim’s avatar

@Dick You need to select PC Suite mode once the phone is connected. I’d suggest turning Bluetooth off to make it simpler. I’ll try and tackle USB again tomorrow as I’d like to get everything working if I can.

  23. Dick’s avatar

Thanks – I will try that.

I have duplicated calendar entries – why is this, and what can I do about it?

  24. jim’s avatar

@Dick Are they all day events or just “normal” events and are they on iCal or subscribed calendars? I had some initial issues with a subscribed Google Calendar doubling up all day events.

Assuming you have all your calendar details held OK on the Mac you can reset the Mini from the Device menu and sync again which should stop it.

  25. Dick’s avatar

    Hi, Thanks…

Seems like all calendar entries, single time, all day or more than a day.

They are not duplicated in iCal or Entourage.

There was a conflict issue – I think that the events defaulted to some thing slightly different to do with an URL, and the system then thought that the were different events and synced both of them.

If I now sync again, it might double up all my iCal events?

  26. Dick’s avatar

I have backed up iCal and synced again, without duplicating events in iCal.

Can I delete all calendar entries on the N07 mini and start again?

  27. jim’s avatar

Yes, do the device reset as outlined above.

  28. Emvee’s avatar

Jim! Finally works. I had to re-install 10.4.11.

    Thanks for the great work!

  29. Dick’s avatar

Hi… I did not want to reset the whole device – I would have had to restore from my PC and my mac to get all the info back.

I have tried USB with PC Suite mode, but it does not work.

When I connected directly to the mac instead of via a hub it did find it (once or twice) but would not connect to it.

  30. jim’s avatar

Resetting the device in iSync only wipes the Contacts and the Calendar on the device, it doesn’t touch apps or anything else that iSync doesn’t handle (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iSync/2.0/en/isc20.html)

The other option is to delete everything from the phone’s calendar but this *may* wipe everything on your Mac too.

  31. Dick’s avatar

Thank you for the info, but it did not work.

I had already manually deleted most of the duplicate entries, back to about a year ago.

  32. jim’s avatar

I’m not sure what else to suggest other than some testing of creating events at both ends of the sync and seeing when it doubles up. Other than that you could try the sync diagnostics tool to see what output that gives you but fear it may be of no practical use.

    Hi,

I tried to do this with the Nokia N97, and this happened:

OK: Pair phone with the Mac
OK: Activate Bluetooth on Mac and phone (also made my phone discoverable)
OK: Put plugin into [Macintosh HD]/Library/PhonePlugins
    OK: Open iSync
    OK: Add Device

Error: Phone not supported, along with picture of some generic old phone.

Could not get to a list from which I could select.
    Could not get synced.

Close, but I could not get there.

    Peter

  34. jim’s avatar

The plugin is for the N97 Mini, not the N97. Nokia have their own iSync plugin for the N97.

  35. jim’s avatar

Looks like Nokia now have an official N97 Mini plugin available. Glad they got there in the end! You can safely remove my plugin, install the official one and carry on syncing as normal.

  36. Dick’s avatar

    Thanks, Jim.

I got the official Nokia iSync working… but I deleted and re-paired and re-added my phone as a USB device… and I could no add it until I connected the USB directly to the computer instead of via a Hub.

Now that I have added it as a USB device, I can sync from the hub.

This pluggin works on Nokia 5530? I would like to sync this phone to my contacs on mac.

  39. jim’s avatar

Sorry but it won’t work, you’ll have to wait for an official one from Nokia.

    Hi,
After installing the latest n97 mini update today, I can’t get the official iSync plug in or yours to work. The phone is no longer recognised I’m assuming it’s due to a version number reving somewhere. Do you think you can rebuild your plugin to support this new firmware release ?

  41. jim’s avatar

I too have upgraded to the Mini’s v11 firmware but my official Nokia iSync plugin is still working fine. Have you tried deleting the device from iSync and re-adding?

  42. Ben’s avatar

Worked fine after moving the files into the user/library/phones folder
